Precision of the SMILE Procedure
With a total refractive strength of two thirds of the eye, the human cornea serves as a refractive surface. The light rays enter the eye through the cornea, are refracted, travel through the lens and internal eye structures, and finally arrive at the retina where they are focused to create a picture. You can alter the cornea’s (and the eye’s) refractive power by altering the cornea’s curvature or form. The middle layer of the cornea, known as the stroma, is reshaped to accomplish this. The SMILE laser removes a microscopic layer of the stromal tissue it produces, known as the lenticule, which the skilled surgeon subsequently removes by a brief incision of 2 to 3 millimeters. This method is extremely accurate because the tissue removal has the effect of changing the corneal curvature to match the spectacle number (dioptric power) of the patient’s glasses. The laser quickly and painlessly completes all of these tasks. The lenticule, a microscopic layer of the stromal tissue the SMILE laser creates, is removed by the laser and is then surgically removed by a qualified surgeon through a small incision of 2 to 3 mm. Because the tissue removal alters the corneal curvature to match the spectacle number (dioptric power) of the patient’s glasses, this approach is incredibly exact. These tasks are all rapidly and painlessly accomplished by the laser.
